I really like this article because, it has some truth to it. Also, for me being a African American young man it is nice to know that just because someone is not of color they still understand what we are going threw and hopefully feel our struggle. On the other hand referring back to number 46 in the article it states "I can chose blemish cover or bandages in flesh color and have them more or less match my skin" I think that along with other bullet points in the article are pointless for her to bring up. It almost feel like she is "Knit Picking" and being real paranoid with this whole situation. But all in all this is a good article its like a breath of fresh air.
After reading the article White Privilege, I can feel this women's point of view. Not being an African American does not give myself the chance to see how she is feeling. On some of these I can picture myself in her situation and see what minorities have to deal with every day. I have never had to worry about my race when I have ran into a cop referring back to number 25. On the other hand, I also can see how a sense of paranoia has set in because this women is not living her live like most people should. Overall this article was very thought provoking.
After watching the Tim Wise videos, reading the article, and watching the Sarah Palin video i have come to many conclusions. I belive the Wise nailed it exactly on thge haed when he spoke of white privlage. It is sad but true, and as a fellow african american i have noticed exactly what he was talking about. In most cases white people wouldnt think twice if another white american was an avid gun user or was a fan of hunting. On the contrary if an african american happened to support guns they would imediatly be deemed as a threat and or criminal. Also if one african american may mess up in school or answer a question wrong, then automaticly they have spoken for the entier race of blacks. Lastly i find it very sadening to realize that in the U.S.A more white people are users of drugs but it is the black and hispanic races that are the ones behind bars. Not to mention combined they only make-up 25% of drug use in america, and yet 90% of the black and hispanic drud users are behind bars. My last thought is that we cant change people, they have to want to change themselves. So as an African american male I realize that I will have to work twice as hard to be afforded simple privileges that whites receive for free.
I really like what "STAT" said about acknowledgment that there are some whites that can realize our struggle. It is indeed a breath of freash air to know that we are not in fact the only ones that realize how are it can be to deal with racial adversity on the day-to-day basis. I do feel that sometimes over thinking racial thoughts can lead to statements that will make it seem that you are a racist yourself, much like the article we read.
After reading the article and watching these videos on white privilege it really made me think of certain things that happen within minorities that we don't really think about each and every day because of where we come from. We come from a great school district where everyone is treated as equals. After reading this article it all makes sense but we don't recall this a lot because it doesn't happen as often around us. I agree with everyone that made there posts. I myself can't speak for different minorities, but I can see where the woman who wrote the article was coming from. I do believe that she was somewhat being very paranoid but every person has there own right to express there opinions and should be treated the way they want to. All in all the article was very good and the videos were very good in the ability to be able to think about people around you and what they might be going through.
I think that Peggy McIntosh really hit alot of the white privilegis of today. I also agree with Stat, being an african american its nice to know that someone outside our race are aware what is going in the life of minorities.
I read the article and watched the videos and honestly I connected much more with the videos. The article, to me, almost goes "in one eye and out the other". The list was the only really interesting part just because it sparked some realization and some wondering. For someone to write 50 ways white people have privileges is sort of neurotic. It's sort of weird to think of so many ways a white person is "over privileged". I agree 100% that #46 (flesh colored band-aids) is just not needed because no one would ever think of that. When it comes to the videos, Time Wise uses comedy with amazing success in partnership of real facts to get it through his audiences heads. One part that really stuck out to me was when he talked about the 19 terrorists flying into buildings...white people decide to then "randomly" do security checks on people of the same race. But, we don't do anything when crazy white people run into forests and blow things up. By the way, what is the deal with white people and forests...? The "Sarah Palin" video is one of the best examples we can see in America today and it deserves more credit than we probably give it. Tim directly points out what we, as Americans, do when a white girl gets pregnant and when a girl of color gets pregnant. Finally, I think it's crazy how people can attack Michelle Obama's patriotism when she is THE FIRST LADY! Sarah Palin's husband was a crazy white boy who wanted to secede from our United States...no one said anything...makes you think doesn't it?
I agree with "Ballon" that we come from a great community. We are a diverse and successful community and school district. We don't get to witness what goes on in other minorities. We are very lucky for who and where we are. I hope that, as a class, we gain positive knowledge about the minorities around us...religion included.
After reading the article by Peggy McIntosh and watching Tim Wise, I somewhat can understand where the writer is coming from. The article was a little out there and very criticle but at the same time very true. Like Balloon, the article made me more aware and made me think of things in a whole new perspective. Like Indians said, since we come very a very diverse community we do not get to witness certain behavior but then again I am aware of the minorities and different religions around us. I think what Wise said it true, even though I wish it wasn't. All in all, we can not change the opinions of people who have grown up a certain way, and have been taught this mentality of white priveledge, but I think if we continue the way things are going, and african americans continue to stay on a positive path, we will end up in an even better environment.
After I read the article by Peggy McIntosh and watched the Tim Wises video, I made a huge connection and they both made me realize how important it is to recognize minorities and it made me realize the side affects and if I can one day control a response to a minority I will know the right response, not a response that makes a person wonder and feel uncomfortable in their position. I agree with everyones post especially Balloon who said they couldn't speak for different minorities but when I try to put myself in other minorities shoes I can feel their "out of place feelings" like she says in the article when the minority group is overly watched and treated as the wrong and not the right. After I watched the videos, Time Wise really caught my eye when he talked about the terrorists , and I agree with what Indians said when he talked about white people when they decide to randomly do security checks on people of the same race. And it is all crazy to me when we actually are not doing anything when white people are running in forests. Also the part on Sarah Palin was such a good example for people to realize how much we are separating people. This article and the video were great ways for people to notice the problems that americans are still going through today.
I think that stereo types, racism, excetera is always going to be an issue. Yes it is terrible that people do this and believe this, it never going to go away. In the area we live in I don’t think there is a big problem with stereo types, racism, excetera. In other places I garauntee these problems go on every day. Going back to sara’s daughter, if there is a pregnant teen at our school they are viewed the same no matter if they are white, black, yellow, purple, green.
The Sarah Palin video is kind of shocking. Everything that he brought up is crazy that the people around Sarah Palin could have been related to someone in high power and most of us didnt even hear about this in the election. The reason why "white privilege" is called the invisible knapsack or whatever is because if you are white you are born with it and don't even realize it. Being a minority in a white community messes with your mindset. You have to watch your every move because there is always going to be a sterotype "there goes that (minority) doing (whatever) typical (minority)." Like in the Sarah Palin video her daughters boyfriend said he likes to "shoot shit for fun." If you heard a different type of race say that you would think he is crazy and have him on watch ASAP.
I agree with Mr. Big Man STAT on just about everything he just said. Its not that i disagree with what he said about the knit picking and being paranoid and having pointless bullet points but if you actually think about it its true. I've never seen a ban-aid in any other kind of skin tone except for the ones with cartoons on them. But those are things people take for granted and don't sit down anto realize the little things like that
After reading the atricle and watching the Tim Wise video there are things in both that I think need to be adressed. I particullary found more stunning things in the White Privilege article. Certain things she addressed such as her children will never have to be told that people should treat them equally and how when she moves to a area she will not have to worry about her neighbors accepting her is all true. Some white people dont fully inderstand how life was made for them. But I also feel that blacks need to stop acting like society owes them something. Blacks are not the only minorites that get picked on so they need to stop looking for hand outs and knoding thier heads when people say things like "I know you were treated unfairly" and things of that nature. The bottom line to me is that in this world if you want to get any where stop feeling pitty for yourself and get what you need to get done done.
I kinda agree with STATS but at the same time I feel like as long as you keep mentioning a struggle there will always be one. Frankly the stuggle is over and people need to realize that if change was coming it would have happened already. But I do agree with the knit picking statement, that is very true. Somethings are un needed and that was one of them
I agree with bean in the sene that racism will always be apart of us, but there are issues today that we can address in the classroom to make each generation better and better over time. So that one day we can truly say that everyone is not only created to be equals but treated them as well.
I agree with Tim Wise that the first explanation is bogus. He brings up good points such as most of the drug users being white, yet not many of them are in jail. And that not many of the drug users are black, yet most of the people in jail for using drugs are black. His point about "overprivileged" is good. I disagree with Albert because I don't think it is to late for change.
The piece of literature “White Privilege” is an interpretation of how our society has unfolded in the last fifty years. I don’t agree with how the author portrays our problem with racism. He tends to focus on what if facts that raise suspicion towards the subject he is touching on but does not show facts or give predictions of what will occur. The author also says many untrue statements that he believes our up to debate but have clearly been proven otherwise. He tries to imply that these events are up to debate and have been portrayed as one way because of the primarily white race that dominated society at the time. They author is biased in his support towards minorities and is trying to debate proven facts.
I do not agree with bean when he says if a teen gets pregnant at our school they are viewd the same. That is bull if u ask me. If a white girl gets pregnant its crazy weird and taboo. If a black girl gets pregnant then its typical and exspected. You might say its not but it is soo true and people think that if they have these perceptions of people then they have some form of rascim in them but in reality our minds are trained to be like that and it so sad.
I agree with what Patrick said. I also think that the Tim Wise video and the Sarah Palin video really did show how people think and proved how people perceive different things dealing with people of different races. What they were saying about how people think about other people of certain races having babies or doing drugs is sad but true. Im glad we come from a school that is more diverse, but the rest of our country is not like this. I do think that things have come a long way and that things are getting better but we obviously have a long way to go
The article White Privilege is something I completely disagree with. Some of the statements that describe how some prejudices can be coped with are those that illustrate a paranoid mind. Honestly some of them made no sense whatsoever; I understand completely that in order to deal with racism one must discuss it-but some of the interpretations of how the author feels are really "out there".
I agree with what Anonymous said...I feel that the author didnt portray 2010s problem with racism but how racism has been dealt with over the last 50 years. There are new upcoming issues that haven't been discussed in detail as of yet.
From watching the Tim Wise videos, I think he had brought out what seems to be new information. Not only are the African Americans doing things that are dangerous but also the white people. I think that Tim did a good job giving specific info on whites doing things that don't seem big, but when a black or hispanic person does it, it's like the world is coming to an end.
Shaqtus, I think that you were on a good start until you said that you think it is too late for a change. Why do you think that? I don't think it is too late for a change because, if we don't make it, we can teach the younger generation below us and they will grow up making a difference. Thats just my opinion though.
Unfortunately I do not agree with what NewYork123 said because I feel that the article was very true and to deal with problems you do not always have to talk them out and they can indeed be written on a piece of paper to explain what is going on or what they are thinking inside. When they said the article was to forward I disagreed because these problems are really going on in this world today and for people to actually realize and notice them there does have to be the one person to put them out there and express how they feel about them.
I agree with what NewYork123 said about some of the ideas in the article being "really out there" At the same time, though, most of the things in that article are true or the way people truly feel. I also agree with what Spongebob said. These are problems and some people are really hurt by the way they are stereotyped or how others are looked at. In regards to Albert's second comment I kind of agree. Our society has obviously come extremely far from the days of slavery and even from the days of segregation. Unfortunately I don't think racism or prejudice is ever going to completely go away. Things have gotten a lot better and I think that they will continue, but there is always going to be someone who thinks they are better or someone who looks down on a certain minority.
I agree with what spongebob said about it being a connection between the article and the video. Also the fact that person is realizing what I said in my original blog.
I agree with what 20orang10 said about the ideas in the article being really out there. But like spongebob said, some or most of the ideas in the article are in fact really going on. And I think she is bringing the ideas/issues to peoples attention in a different and unique way. I saw the connection between the article and the video and it also made me realize how miniorities are so different and all the little things that come into play. I don't think racism or prejudice will ever completely ago away as well, but I think if we were able to come such a long way since the days of slavery we are definetly capible of continuing that change and pursueing a less segregated world.
I agree with what ..... was saying about the stereotypes of white males and black males. Our society today is very stereotypical and peole tend to blame crimes on african americans. So when Wise talked about how for the white male everything is okay and nobody does anything, even though he openly admitted to shooting things. If an african american male would admit the same thing he would be looked at as a bad influence/negative person. While the white male enjoys freedom of such stereotypes and thoughts. To break these stereotypes we need to educate the next generations. Unfortunately there will always be some types of racism. The KKK and white supremists will pass on their foolish ideologies and beliefs.
